11/1/2026Season recap

oliver grant wins the most matches and still loses the crown. okafor laughs!

Okafor steals the title from rival Grant by one point despite fewer wins, while Kovač and Whitaker hold up the basement.

The Riverside League 2025 is over, and Daniel Okafor is your champion with 38 points from 12 wins in 15 matches. Congratulations, Daniel. You won the title without winning the most matches, which is a skill. Your eternal rival Oliver Grant racked up 13 wins, one more than you, and still finished a point behind on 37. Okafor didn't so much win the championship as file it correctly. These two have traded the title back and forth for years, and this time Grant did more of the work while Okafor took the trophy home. Somewhere Oliver is staring at the standings, counting his wins on his fingers and getting the same infuriating answer every time.

Then there's the official podium, which belongs in a museum of modern art. It reads Okafor gold, Sofia Rossi silver, Lukas Horvat bronze. Rossi finished sixth on 31 points. Lukas finished seventh on 22. The table and the podium apparently never met. Maya Chen, third on 35 points with 12 wins, and Grant are left wondering what exactly they were playing for. Maya won as many matches as the champion and got nothing. Rossi, with 11 wins and 4 losses, can thank the paperwork gods. Her old junior coach Marco Bianchi finished 13th with 14 points and just 3 wins, so the student has well and truly left the teacher behind. Marco's coaching résumé now looks a lot better than his own match record.

The Horvat family drama is the gift of the season. Lukas is the older brother by two years and never lets Jakob forget it. Jakob answered with 34 points, 12 wins and fourth place, a full 12 points ahead of his big brother, who limped in seventh on 22 points with 8 wins. Somehow Lukas still ended up with a bronze next to his name on the podium. Jakob gets the points, Lukas gets the medal, and Thanksgiving dinner gets very loud. Emma Lindqvist, fifth with 32 points and 11 wins, was good enough to scare the contenders but not good enough to join them. That makes her the league's most respectable non-event.

The middle of the table is where ambition goes to nap. Hannah Weber (8th, 21 points, 7 wins) and her husband Tom Fletcher (11th, 17 points, 5 wins) drive to the club together either way. On the way home Hannah gets to point out that she won two more matches, and Tom gets to stare very hard at the road. Clara Dubois was ninth with 20 points and only 6 wins, which works out to nine losses of quiet mediocrity. Ben Carter matched her 6 wins but collected just 18 points, so even his victories came on discount. Aisha Rahman finished 12th with 16 points and 10 losses, the tennis equivalent of showing up mainly for the snacks.

Now the basement, where legends are definitely not made. Elena Petrova somehow won 5 matches and managed only 11 points, two wins more than Marco Bianchi and three points fewer. That is a mathematical tragedy worthy of an opera. At the very bottom, Nina Kovač and Sam Whitaker share the floor with 7 points and 2 wins each, which means 13 losses apiece. Their best moments of the season were probably the warm-ups. Nina and Sam, this is your minute of fame: you made everyone else in Riverside feel like a contender. Okafor has the trophy and Grant has the grudge. Everyone else has a long winter to think about what they did.
